It was 50 years ago. The eight talented men in the photograph above assembled in the shade of the usual mango tree and discussed the need for nurturng their innate talents in the fields of art and literature. As a result, there emerged what stands out today as the Janani Arts Club and Library at Mudavanmukal, near Poojappura in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, popularly called God's Own Country.

Formed in 1960, the club building is situated on a strip of land donated by the late S. Narayanan Nair. Looking back, the club has had enviable achievements. It was at the instance of the club that a cooperative bank was established in Mudavanmukal. It was the club that spearheaded the movement to foil the attempt of the government to close down the local Lower Primary school for being uneconomical. It was the Janani Club that made a concerted campaign for the prohibition of liquor consumption in the area. The club earned the praise and support of the people for its efforts in this direction.

With an apolitical membership the club is working for the social and educational development of the locality. It also fights against the ills and evils of society. The club now serves its members and the local populace with a view to promoting their academic and artistic acumen.

The club conducts periodical debates and lectures on subjects of general concern and interest. Children's Forum, Literacy Session and Mass Education Centre also function regularly under the aegis of the club. Educational aid to the economically backward students forms part of the welfare programmes of the club.

Many professional plays like Manam Thelinju, Jeevitham Oru Kodunkaattaanu, Divyabali, Abhayaarthinikal,  Abhimanyu and Nagamanikyam were staged under the auspices of the Janani club. It is proposed to bring out a souvenir on the occasion of the golden jubilee. Creation of this blog is another step to commemorate the completion of 50 solid years of its fruitful existence.

The Janani Arts Club and Library enjoys the association of over 300 members from various strata of life. Led by its president Mr G. K. Anil Kumar and secretary Mr K. Chandrachoodan the club has many social and welfare activities on the anvil for the days ahead.
